Pie and a pint? Full Sunday roast and yummy dessert or a fine dining experience? There’s many great places to eat out in Penistone and the surrounding area. From traditional pubs to boujee eateries, local cafes and italian pasta places, there’s a rich choice of food and drink easily accessible from your cottage. If you prefer a more personalised dining experience then we do offer our own private chef that can come to your holiday cottage.

The Dunkirk Inn

The Dunkirk Inn is a beautiful village pub with great food and a dog friendly area in the bar. They pride themselves on having locally sourced fish, bread, vegetables and meat, as well as only stocking the best wines and spirits and having a wide range of local ales. With a traditional and rustic feel inside it’s a good Yorkshire pub, around a 10 or 20 minute drive from our cottages. It also has a lovely roof terrace which is perfect for a warmer weather visit.


A beautifully rustic styled Italian restaurant and bar, Devour is situated in Thongsbridge, Holmfirth next to a gently flowing river. They have a great cocktail menu with plenty of choice for wines and gins, also vegetarian and vegan options for their food menu which has plenty of choices for delicious Italian dishes. It has a lovely outdoor area with some shelter for those brighter days or warmer evenings. A 15/20 minute drive from our cottages it is only a short drive away.

The George Inn

If you prefer a more traditional pub then the George Inn is worthy of investigation. They also organise Pie & Pea Walks heading off from The George on foot with a reward of Homemade Pie, Peas and Roast Potatoes waiting for you on your return. The inn has a cosy interior and a nice beer garden for warmer days. It’s also dog friendly. You can find the pub at 114 Denby Ln, Upper Denby, HD8 8UE.

Generation Cafe

A lovely and stylish café bar in the middle of Penistone serving different sandwiches, flatbreads, burgers, toasties as well as other options for a delicious lunch. Only a short drive from Unsliven Bridge Farm & Barn and within walking distance from Aitken House, Leapings Cottage & Weavers Cottage, it has a child friendly menu and has vegan and gluten free options. They have plenty of different choices of drinks but it is also a licensed bar opening Friday and Saturday night with cocktails and other alcoholic options.

Waggon and Horses

Located in Oxspring this is approximately a 15 minute drive from most of our cottages. The Waggon and Horses restaurant is a traditional, cosy country pub with a roaring log fires. This pub has plenty of space and can accommodate larger or small groups. They also have an outside eating area for those sunny days. We would suggest to book a table if you would like to eat here. Sourcing local fresh seasonal products.


Based in Fox Valley Shopping Park in Stocksbridge, Ponti’s is a beautiful Italian restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has a great reputation in the local area and serves some of the best traditional Italian dishes. Outdoor and indore seating available with private dining available for advanced bookings. The drinks and cocktail menus have plenty of great choice and the bar team are always happy to take requests if they have the ingredients. Fox Valley is only a 10 minute drive from Aitken House, Leapings Cottage, Weavers Cottage and Spicer Manor, and only 5 minutes from Unsliven Bridge Farm and Barn.

Windmill Cafe

Located in Millhouse Green looking out over the valley with beautiful views, Windmill Coffee Shop is a lovely dog friendly café with beautiful cakes and plenty of lunchtime options,including afternoon tea. With a lovely log burner in winter, it’s perfect for cold weather visits. It also has a small garden centre next door to visit after your lunch, only a short drive from Unsliven Bridge Farm & Barn and within walking distance from Aitken House, Leapings Cottage & Weavers Cottage. A perfect stop for a coffee or lunch after a lovely country walk.

Yummy Yorkshire

Starting out as a dairy farm, since 2007 Yummy Yorkshire has transformed into a great place to visit, having their very own ice cream parlour with more flavours than you can imagine, a lovely restaurant (open daily until 5pm, open some evenings for prebooking, check out the website for these as they are not open every night) and they host regular markets at least once a month, more in the run up to Christmas. They also do completely fresh afternoon teas, including specific menus for gluten free and vegetarian! It is a only 10/15 minute drive from our cottages and less than 5 minutes from Spicer Manor. With plenty or tables and space they can easily addomodate small and large groups and help you celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary.

The Huntsman

This lovely pub in Thurlstone, South Yorkshire has a friendly atmosphere, a great selection of beers, traditional pub games and a sheltered South facing beer garden. They serve food 3 times a week on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Tuesday is pie night. Thursday the menu changes each week as they do a “Taste of … evening”and Sunday they serve Sunday Dinner. Get there early on a Sunday to avoid missing a table. They are also dog friendly and have a beer garden for those sunny days.

The New Inn

Formerly known as The White Heart before it closed, The New Inn was recently purchased and beautifully renovated in 2021 to an upmarket pub, serving home cooked food with plenty of choice and receiving great reviews since it has reopened. Situated in Penistone it is only a 10 minute drive or taxi ride from our two Unsliven Bridge Cottages and Spicer Manor, and only 5 minutes from Aitken House and Leapings/Weavers Cottage (only 1.4 miles away from these it is easily walkable). With no need to book a table it’s open every day from midday with a great choice of cocktails as an aperitif before your dressed-up, evening meal.
